A lot of mobile geeks have been comparing the Amazon Kindle 3G with the Apple iPad forgetting that the two addresses entirely different markets. While looking about the same from the outside with the KindleDX model sporting a 9.7 display against the Apple iPad’s 10-inch display, and both having WiFi and 3G data connectivity, the two nifty mobile gadgets have an entirely different set of mobile wizardry meant to address different markets.

The Kindle has a more focused application – eBook reading. It is clearly pitched more to a niche market of book lovers who prefer to see the familiar pages of a hardbound or paperback. And it really does so superbly. With features that have made it an iconic as the eBook reader that the competition can only imitate which they often do, but not so charmingly as the Amazon e-reader.

On the other hand, the Apple iPad has a wider set of features that make it more a tablet computing device targeted to a more multimedia-centric market. These features take on added wizardry for movie watching and image viewing, along with audio playback in the popular MP3 formats. It does eBook as well but more as a subset of its features. For many, the iPad3G is a bigger iPhone 4 and takes the viewing experience to a higher plane.

The fact is that eBook reading has been a secondary function that nearly all mobile gadgets can do, even in the early days when PDF files of entire office manuals and books could be downloaded and read on the PC and laptops. Today, these same files can be downloaded and read on smartphones like your Android and Blackberry handsets, along with iPhones.

But it took an Amazon Kindle3G to create a trend for PDF reading as the main reason for getting a gadget. You didn’t buy a laptop or a smartphone to read books. Today, you buy the kindle to do so. Thanks to its electrophoretic display that makes it easy on the eyes to read a display almost no differently from reading the physical pages of a book. It’s so much more engaging and less debilitating on the eyes than reading a page for hours on the backlighted LCD screen of a laptop or a smartphone.

The same problem comes with the Apple iPad-3G. While its multitouch capacitive super LCD screen is simple gorgeous to behold in movie watching and reviewing you photos, it really can’t compete with the reading pleasures one gets from using the Amazon reader.

Both has WiFi and 3G connectivity that allows you to surf making the Kindle-3 an internet tablet as well though on a limited scale. The nice thing about using the Kindle3 is that 3G connection is free when using it over Amazon’s Whispernet or over AT&T’s WiFi hotspots anywhere in the country. No such luck with the iPad which requires a contract to get your 3G connection up.

So with an entirely different set of features, it’s really easy to make your choice. If you want movies and images on the side, along with reading full color comic eBooks or office manuals in PDF format, go Apple iPad. With Kindle, while native PDF is supported, you get grayscale pages and you can’t watch movies on it. But if you are a book lover who wants to read without straining the eyes, the Kindle 3G is the clear choice.

The Apple iPad has only been around since April of this year, but it’s already had quite an impact.

Apple had estimated that they would sell 1 million iPads a month after launch, demand was much stronger than anticipated and has been much stronger than supply ever since launch.

According to market research company DisplaySearch the iPad has eaten in to the personal computer market so much already that mini-notebook shipments in the last quarter were 13% lower than the year before because of the Apple iPad.

Of course this hasn’t gone unnoticed by electronics manufacturers around the globe who have been rushing to get their own tablets on the shelves. Already Samsung are bringing out the Galaxy tablet, RIM have confirmed the Blackberry tablet OS and others are hot on their heels. So it will come as no surprise that Apple are planning a 2nd Generation Apple iPad to keep ahead of the game.

Rumours of the iPad 2 (as it has been named by many) have been growing now for a couple of months and most commentators are agreed that we will see the 2nd generation iPad launched early in 2011. But what will it have that the 1st Generation iPad doesn’t?

Business analysts, telecoms experts and tech geeks the world over have been joining the dots to try and work out just what Apple fans will get.

Front facing camera – I think this has to be a definite and most agree. Facetime the one-touch Video calling software is already available on the new iPod Touch and the iPhone 4 and the next natural step is to make it available on the iPad.

More Connectivity – Many have moaned about the lack of a USB port, but it’s unlikely that Apple would install this. They have made good income from licensing docking products that fit the Apple connector that is prevalent across its devices. More likely is that the 2nd Generation Apple iPad will have a 2nd Apple Connector that allows you to dock the device while in landscape mode.

Smart Bezel – This is the name the blogosphere has given it already. Patent chasers have identified a patent from Apple that sees an extra control/input area being added to the iPad in addition to its single front-facing button. The ‘bezel’ is takes up the bottom left corner of the device, but it’s unclear right now whether the bezel is a push button or touch area.

More power – There have been a number of leaks that suggest that the iPad 2 will ship with the new ARM Cortex A9 processor increase the tablet’s capabilities.

Less bulk – The patent chasers have also got their hands on some sketches that suggest the 2nd Generation Apple iPad will definitely be thinner than the original to make it easier to hold in one hand. Apple fans will also hope that it’s a bit lighter for the same reason.

Is that it? Well that’s all the rumour mill has to offer at the moment, but it would definitely take the iPad on to another level and almost definitely keep it ahead of its rivals, for the moment at least.

The Power Point

There is no doubt that a laptop – at least the newer models being sold today – pack more processing power than the Apple iPad. The Apple iPad can only boast of a 1 GHz Apple A4 CPU which, judging by the numbers alone, is even less powerful than the usual netbook people have become accustomed to.

Of course, Apple has a reputation for optimizing every ounce of processing power that their machines can exert. Additionally, Apple isn’t encumbered by a problematic OS that seems to get slowed down by baggage as time goes by.

Also, Apple is known for doing some amazing things with what little they have. Who could’ve guessed that the Apple iPhone and the iPod Touch can play a full 3D first person shooter?

But based on numbers alone, the laptop is a clear cut winner here. This is beyond doubt.

Begging For An Extension

Additionally, the laptop should likewise be declared as the winner when it comes to upgradable features. Basically, most laptops allow you to upgrade its specs, from the RAM to the video card to the storage space to the individual components that comprise the whole. Some laptops even allow you to upgrade the CPU, which is nothing short of amazing.

At this point in time, there is no indication that the Apple iPad is upgradable. And with a price difference of a hundred dollars per storage space increments of 16GB, all signs lead to the unfortunate fact that the Apple iPad won’t ever be upgradable.

The Cool Factor

Wired Magazine published an interesting study a few years ago, one which claimed that more than 60% of laptop owners purchased their machines because it’s the “in” thing to do. This merely shows that the cool factor is an important feature in choosing many of the gadgets available in the market today.

And when it comes to “cool factor,” no one comes close to Steve Jobs and his inventions. The iPad wins this one, hands down!

So, which one should you choose: an Apple iPad or a laptop?
